Academic Support

The Principia takes the position that education in its fullest sense cannot be confined to academic subjects but includes the building of character.

In the words of Mary Kimball Morgan, the Founder of The Principia, “Developing the power to think accurately, wisely, and with intelligent discrimination; cultivating the ability to dissect thought and to discard that which is not constructive in daily living; strengthening the capacity to form high ideals and the courage necessary for standing by those ideals until they are outlined in Christian character – that is the work The Principia regards as true education.”

Academic and Career Advising(ACA) is home to an academic peer support group. Success Group, a campus resource open to all students, is designed for those who want to improve study skills, develop time management, and demonstrate greater academic achievement. A student may choose to use this resource for one quarter, or for his/her entire academic career at Principia.

We conduct weekly group or one-on-one meetings for students who want to improve their academic performance. Here is some of what we do:

  • Set academic and personal goals.S
  • Work on an Educational Planning Guide.
  • Identify self-assessment objectives.
  • Develop time management techniques and study skills, using the Weekly Planner.
  • Identify weekly objectives for each class and monitor progress.
  • Elicit specific feedback from faculty.
  • Discover behaviors that thwart success and problem-solve ways to overcome them.
  • Share success stories and inspiration.

Each week, students also meet individually with a member of ACA’s staff to develop individual strengths, set academic goals, and review progress towards those goals.

If you’re interested in participating in this program, contact Suzie Goewert, x5777 or Midge Browning, x5776.
