Diakonia: Helping Humanity
Diakonia: Helping Humanity

Diakonia, a New Testament Greek word that means stewardship or service, is the theme of a three-course freshman program that combines classroom theory with practical hands-on application in the community. The Environmental Chemistry course teaches global awareness, scientific thinking, and the ability to identify and help resolve key environmental issues. Global Sociology is an introductory course in the scientific study of the global human society. Here we provide skills to navigate our world and understand the social forces—race, class, gender, culture, media, politics, and environment—that attempt to shape and influence us. Through study of Project Management, students learn how to research, plan, schedule, organize, and manage a project. This hands-on project-centered learning (PCL) class will include extensive experiential volunteer work in the community. Diakonia culminates in a weekend trip to Memphis, Tennessee, where the students visit EPA Superfund sites and the National Civil Rights Museum. One outcome of the program is to help students learn what it means to live for all humanity as informed citizens.
