Q: Where do freshmen live on campus?
A: All new freshmen live on campus in two well-equipped, comfortable dorms designed for freshmen — Anderson Hall and Rackham Court. Each freshman dorm also houses approximately 8 upperclassmen who serve as resident assistants (RAs) — one for every eight freshmen. After your freshman year, you will move to another house which will have sophomore, junior and senior students. This will be your on-campus residence until you graduate.
Q: Does Principia offer students the opportunity to get involved in theatre, musical or dance productions?
A: Yes. Quarterly drama or musical productions seek students who want to participate in these activities — from acting and dancing, playing musical instruments, building sets, learning lighting techniques to choreographing and directing dance numbers and managing backstage activities. The Instrumental Ensemble and the College Choir meet weekly in preparation for two quarterly campus presentations. Also, vocal and instrumental students can prepare for public recitals held every Friday during the lunch hour in Principia's music hall. A major dance production is held at the end of Winter Quarter each year.
Q: What organizations are available to join?
A: Help design and build Principia's solar car; join the Rugby Club, learn how to fight fires as a member of our fire crew; work with Amnesty International or be a peer counselor at a local correction facilities for boys or join the Big Brother/Sister program; join the Christian Science Organization (CSO); or unite with the Black Student Union or with the Latin American Student Organization (LASO).
Q: What student government positions are available?
A: All campus positions such as Student Body President, Campus Scholastic Head, Athletic Head, and Social Head are elected positions. All student resident houses have elected house boards. Students who want to participate in student government will find many opportunities to do so.
Q: Can freshmen have cars on campus?
A: Yes, although students who are on financial aid are encouraged to exercise good judgment in the use of a vehicle due to gas costs. Limited parking is also available for those students that drive to campus from home but leave their cars unused for the quarter.
Q: What do students do on the weekends?
A: On campus activities are carefully planned by the campus social committee. These activities include dances, listening to live music performed by both on and off campus bands; theatre, dance, and musical productions, weekly movies on a large movie screen, and regular parties hosted by dorms or groups on campus — just to list a few events. If you choose to go off campus, you can enjoy local area restaurants, theatres, or shopping malls. Alton is 20 minutes away and St. Louis is less than an hour from Principia. Things to do in St. Louis are endless: go to professional athletic events (baseball Cardinals, ice hockey Blues, or football Rams), attend live musical and dramatic theatre productions, go to the Arch or the Science Museum or the famous St. Louis Zoo; enjoy the many great restaurants; go to movies and/or browse the terrific malls in the St. Louis area.
Q: What are the Community Standards?
A: Principia's standards are based on the principles set forth by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, and by Mary Kimball Morgan, who established Prinicipia.
