Principia Lower School Dress Code2007-2008All dress and grooming must be modest (with no midriff showing), neat, clean, and in good repair, with no extremes or distractions. Bottoms Casual pants, blue jeans, sweat pants, and shorts (long enough to be modest when seated or playing) in either solid colors or prints are appropriate. No overalls, camouflage pants, or pants with rips. Girls may wear skirts and dresses which have a modest length when seated. Dresses must have a modest neckline and sleeves. Shorts should be worn under the dress or skirt for play. When the temperature is below 50 degrees, students need to have their legs covered when they are outside. Tops Shirts may be long- or short-sleeved and must have a fold-over collar, turtleneck, or mock turtleneck; a finished jewel-neck top is okay for girls. T-shirts, crew neck (ribbed collar) shirts, and sleeveless shirts are not acceptable. Solid colors, patterns, plaids, and stripes are okay. Pictures and/or writing (such as a logo) must be 3 inches or smaller and must be appropriate for Principia’s moral standards; a Principia logo may be larger. Camouflage tops are not allowed. In colder weather, the following may be worn over a reg. shirt in the building: sweater, fleece shirt, or sweatshirt—with the same requirement for pictures and writing as indicated above for shirts. (Note: Jackets and sweat shirts worn exclusively outside for recess may have larger writing, numbers, and pictures on them.) Feet Shoes should completely cover the foot and be appropriate for outside play. Sandals, Tevas, flip-flops, clogs, Crocs with/without backstraps, and similar footwear are not acceptable.
Note: After May 1, sixth graders may wear sandals (not flip-flops), Tevas, Crocs, or clogs.
Hair/Headwear Hair must be a solid, natural color. Boys' and girls’ hair must be neat, and teachers must be able to see the students’ eyes. No hats or head coverings may be worn in the building. Scarves or bandanas may only be worn rolled as hair bands and may not cover the head. Headbands and ribbons must not be a distraction. Piercing/Tattoos/Makeup/Jewelry Ear piercing for girls is ok. (Maximum of 2 earrings per ear.) No pierced ears for boys. No body piercing. No temporary or permanent tattoos or drawing on any part of the body. No glitter or other distracting makeup. Jewelry worn should not be excessive, create a safety hazard when playing or doing sports, and may not be a distraction. If the teacher feels it is unsafe or a distraction, the student may be asked to remove it. Outside Clothing 70 degrees and above, consistently—shorts and short sleeves okay Christmas Sharing and Concert Dress Boys should have a collared shirt, tie, nice slacks and belt, dress shoes and dark socks; girls should have a nice dress, skirt and blouse, or dress pants and blouse and dress shoes. For Spring Choir and Band Concerts: White collared shirt (or school will supply a uniform t-shirt) and khaki or wheat colored pants or long skirts--no cargo or casual pants. Dark shoes and socks.All students in grades 3-6 need a white Principia T-shirt and navy blue gym shorts. For grades 1-6, sweatpants, sweatshirt, and sturdy, multipurpose athletic shoes (secured with laces or velcro) are required. Students also need one-piece swimsuits for swimming units. |
