Art & The Artist Classes

Following the Path of Palladio

Margaret D’Evelyn, Ph.D.,
associate professor of art history

Explore the mental makeup of an immensely influential Italian Renaissance architect. Beginning his career as a stonemason, Palladio was unexpectedly given the opportunity of a liberal education, and eventually became the most famous architect ever to have lived. In his Four Books of Architecture, illustrated with woodcut prints, Palladio offers succinct and incisive essays laying out the principles of his architectural practice. Through these books we will study his buildings and his innovative, systematic solutions to architectural needs, including so-called “harmonic villas” for musically-inclined patrons. We will follow Palladio as he journeys to Rome to measure the ruins of the antiquities and wins the competition for the city hall, or “basilica,” in Vicenza. We will watch him take concepts from Venetian Gothic and other medieval houses to create a new type of farmhouse (“villa”), his monumental churches along the water in Venice, and more.

Watercolor: Salt, Spray, and More

Judith Felch, M.F.A., professor emeritus of fine arts

This studio art course is all about exploring and loving the special effects of watercolor — salting, blooming, puddling, and much more. These effects will be used to add energy and mystery to both indirect and direct painting experiments. A prior knowledge of watercolor is not necessary, as the course will include lots of demonstrations and experimentation. Color and design theory and ideas about creativity will keep the class sparking. A supply list will be provided.

10:10am – 12:05pm (double hour),
two-week course

Maybeck’s Principia

Heather Fulkerson, M.A., visiting instructor

At the end of his long and illustrious career, Bernard Maybeck considered his plans and buildings for Principia College to be one of his finest projects. Yet Maybeck’s Principia designs are traditionally the least explored by scholars of the American Arts and Crafts movement. This course will briefly survey Maybeck’s education and career leading up to the Principia commission begun in 1931. We will then carefully consider and explore his master plan for the campus and gain a deeper appreciation for the masterpiece that is Maybeck’s Principia.

11:15am – 12:05pm, two-week course

Portraiture

Diane Koerner Schwartz, M.Ed., professional artist

The methods for capturing a likeness are learnable, and you can do it! Whether you believe you can’t even draw, or consider yourself a more experienced student, you will see limitations dissolve and drop away as you learn drawing from live models. You will learn to see the model’s spiritual qualities emerge along with your individual style or technique. Simple supplies are used by beginners. Experienced students can use pastels. A supply list is provided for both. This class offers individual instruction, demonstrations, and nurturing critiques. For those starting the second week, prior art experience is needed.
