Dress Code
Middle School Dress Code, 2007 - 2008

All dress must be modest, neat, clean, whole, and properly fitting with no extremes or distractions, and no undergarments or midriff showing.

School-Day Dress

Footwear: Any style shoe except thongs, flip-flops, athletic sandals and cleats, and heels or platforms higher than 3 inches. Shoelaces (and pants) may not drag on the ground, and socks must be worn with all shoes except sandals.

Bottoms: Boys & Girls - Solid-colored or patterned, straight-legged pants and shorts (no designs, writing, or decorations on the legs).  Sweatpants (made of sweatshirt or nylon fabrics) and flannel pants are not acceptable.   Fleece pants may be worn.  Shorts may not be shorter than fingertip length. Blue jeans in good condition may be worn. If pants with belt loops are worn with a tucked-in shirt, a belt must be worn. Pants may have outside pockets and hammer loops.  Girls - dresses or skirts, must reach the knee cap.

Tops: Girls and Boys - All students must wear a Lands’ End polo shirt with the Principia logo. Ordering information is as follows:  Call 800-469-2222 (or you can order on the Web - making sure it is from the school clothing catalog).  Our school ID number is 9000-6795-0.  You must use this number when ordering.  Polos may be mesh or interlock, long or short sleeved, and in any color in the Lands’ End school catalog.   Students may also wear a Lands’ End fleece with or without sleeves, with a Principia logo.  No other outer wear, jackets, or sweaters may be worn inside. 

Girls’ and Boys’ Hair: Must be a natural color.  No extreme styles such as spikes or shaved areas.  No facial hair and hair must be off the collar and out of the student’s eyes.

Piercing/Tattoos: No body piercing (except that girls may wear a maximum of 2 earrings per ear). No temporary or permanent tattoos or drawing on any part of the body.  No head coverings may be worn in the academic building.  No glitter makeup or other distracting makeup.

Sunday School Dress (required for boarders, recommended for day students)

Boys - Collared shirt tucked in, belt, sharp school day slacks (no outside pockets or hammer loops), dark socks, polished shoes.

Girls - Sharp school-day dress, no athletic shoes.

Concert Dress

Boys - Collared dress shirt and tie, sport coat (optional), dress slacks (no cargo pants), dark socks, and polished shoes.

Girls - Dressy dresses (backs covered, no low-cut fronts, with shoulders covered by a minimum 1½-inch wide straps, or dressy blouse/ sweater and skirt, dress shoes, hem length and slits must be modest.)

Spring Dance Dress

Boys - Concert Dress.

Girls - Dressy dresses (backs covered, no low-cut fronts, halter or spaghetti straps O.K., or dressy blouse/sweater and skirt, dress shoes, hem length and slits must be modest.)  NO STRAPLESS DRESSES.

Weekend (required for boarders and all school activities

No tobacco, alcohol, drug, sexual, violent, gang, or put-down themes on clothes. Tank tops okay, but no undergarments showing, a minimum of 1½-inch width straps, tight under the arm, and a modest neckline. No cutoffs or short shorts outside the dorm. No tank tops in the dining room and footwear must be worn. No hats may be worn in the academic building at any time.

Spirit Day Dress

Anyone may wear regular school-day dress. However, on Spirit Dress days, students may wear a more casual top as long as it has a Principia logo on it (not just Principia colors). Shirts worn with blue jeans may be untucked. Blue jeans may be faded but must be clean and whole.  Tops must still have sleeves for boys. Girls must have a minimum of 1½-inch wide strap on the shoulder, fit tightly under the arm, and have a modest neckline.

P.E. Clothes

Principia white T-Shirt that says Principia on it.  Navy shorts and white socks.  A Cross-Training type athletic shoe with good arch support should be worn.  Athletic shoes must be kept clean for use on the gym floors.  All necessary and appropriate PE shoes and clothes should be available everyday at PE time.  Sweats - both tops and bottoms for cool days.  During swimming (including the Unity Trip) only modest one-piece bathing suits may be worn.
