Matrix
Concept: Interior Design Firm;
Career Day
Concept Questions:
 | Has working with these different medians allowed us
to become more confident in using our creativity in the classroom? How
so? |
 | How does the appreciation of working with different
medians relate to appreciating different types of people? |
 | How would this understanding help break down barriers
within our community? |
 | How will this experience allow you to experiment more
with your own imaginations? |
 | How can we cooperate like the interior designers,
even though they all have different tastes and different interests? |
 | How do we value "the use of space" and
dimension?
|
Goals:
 | Learn how to compromise with their "business
partners" |
 | For them to develop more of an appreciation for
different medians and to gain more confidence to experiment with their
imagination |
 | For students to gain more of a clear understanding on
how they view the ideas of space and dimension
|
Activities:
 | Have a morning meeting for 45 minutes, discussing
what the goals of the day are and what they will be doing at the firm |
 | Bus to the interior design firm |
 | Have a 20 minute tour to become more familiar with
the firm |
 | Corporate gives speech for 20 minutes on the medians
used in interior design and the importance of working as a team, students
take notes |
 | lunch time in the firm cafeteria where the corporate
answers student's questions |
 | Students pair off with different members of a the
firm |
 | Every pair is given the same floor plan and
dimensions |
 | In one hour, they are supposed to create a floor plan
and provide the different medians they would be working with such as, what
type of textures, carpets, tile, etc...they would be working with |
 | They would then use stencils to pencil in the
furniture they would want to see in their apartment |
 | if they had time left over, they could cut out of
magazines the different types of furniture that they would like to see in
their hypothetical apartment |
 | They would then all then get together and explain why
they used the space and dimensions in the way they did. They would
have to rationalize space and decipher what would be "the best use of
space." |
 | The students would then write in their journals for
ten minutes with these prompt questions, what difficulties did they
encountered in communicating between each other and how were they
solved? What are the benefits of doing a project with an interior
designer? |
 | They will then thank the workers in the firm and head
back to school
|
Evaluation: Student
Evaluation:
 |
Individual notes: How well did the
students and the adults work together? Was there more lack of
communication between the students themselves or the interior designers toward
the students?
|
 | How much did the students involved with the different
art medians when doing their
apartment floor plans? |
 | read their journals: What difficulties did students
have in communicating with others? How were they resolved? |
Teacher Evaluation:
 |
Did I bring enough materials for them to do the
project? |
 |
Was I clear enough in communicating to the firm, what
my expectations were of them? |
 |
What could I do next time so that communication would
be better between the students and the firm workers? Between students
and students? |
