Principia's Lower School strives to establish a school-home partnership that provides a strong moral, academic, social, and athletic foundation. Here's how our teachers approach their work:
To so live Christian Science that all may see and want to live by its teachings. To see each student as unlimited in capability and capacity because each child is a child of God. [Lower School students in class]
To educate each student in such a way that she or he will love and serve humanity.
To consider character development vital as part of educating the whole person.
To pray daily to be guided intuitively as well as professionally that learning may take place naturally and joyously.

Here's a brief summary of the Lower School program:
Language arts — At least two hours daily in all six grades; the children study grammar, spelling, and writing mechanics and publish their own writing and illustrations with the help of their teachers.
Math — Classes in every grade emphasize accuracy, discovery, speed, problem-solving, and application to daily life.
Science — Classes employ reading, research, and hands-on exploration to study the earth and sun, air, living things, ecology, land use, space travel, weather, basic chemistry elements, energy, and electricity.
Social Studies — Students learn about their world by studying different periods of American history, Bible history, and a different world culture at each grade level.
Library — 10,000 books, a growing multi-media collection, and computers with CD-ROM and Internet; an on-line catalog is networked with Principia's high school and college libraries.
Art and music — Studio-art and music classes for all grades; students perform in choral and band concerts and plays; off-campus musicians, theater groups, dancers, and storytellers perform on campus; students annually attend a concert by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.
Computer lab — Used by all grades; applications include problem solving, graphics, word processing, computer programming, science, social studies, math, and language arts.
Physical education — All children develop basic athletic skills, including swimming, and are introduced to all sports played at Middle and Upper schools.
Morning chapels — Speakers on Monday mornings present an inspirational theme for the week, which students and teachers follow up in daily classroom chapel discussions.
Student council — Representatives of each grade rotate in office during the year, and meet regularly with the principal to solve community needs and to sponsor activities, such as community-service projects.
