Archives

The Archives Department maintains the institutional archives for The Principia, a private educational institution serving preschool through college students, located in St. Louis, Missouri, and Elsah, Illinois. In addition to the institutional records, there are a few special collections.

Collections

Some special collections within the Archives:

  • Alumni Book Collection - books written by Principia faculty, staff, and alumni.
  • Edwin S. Leonard Jr. Papers - materials and drafts of the history of Principia written by Edwin S. Leonard Jr.
  • Paul O. Williams Papers - relating to the writing of the Pelbar series by Paul O. Williams.
  • Maybeck and White Collection - letters, field reports, photographs, blueprints, tissues, drawings, pastels, vendor files, and other material related to the building of Principia College by Bernard Maybeck.
  • Percival Robertson Papers - materials collected and drafts of "Gleaning".
  • Scrapbook Collection - class scrapbooks from 1920 to 1960.
  • Charles B. Hosmer Jr. Papers - materials collected by Charles B. Hosmer Jr. during his teaching career related to Principia buildings and student research regarding this geographical area.
  • Ernest Vogel Papers - letters written regarding the special letter collection in the Marshall Brooks Library. This collection is under the jurisdiction of the Director of the Marshall Brooks Library and in storage in the Archives.

We are collecting materials in the following areas:

  • Any material related to the founder of the school, Mary Kimball Morgan.
  • Material about early Principia workers, students, faculty, and staff, as well as faculty research.
  • Principia-related personal photographs, documents, and unique memorabilia related to student life of any period.
  • Institutional material by administration, faculty, or staff.
  • Documents, drawings, and photographs related to Bernard R. Maybeck and his Principia commission.
  • Principia-related documents, drawings, and photographs by or about the following architects and their Principia work: Henry H. Gutterson, Kenneth Wischmeyer, Smith and Entzeroth, Risley and Gould, Guy Study, Norman I. Bailey, and landscape architect Butler Sturtevant.
  • Art work or documents about artists Frederick Oakes Sylvester, Kathryn E. Cherry, Rudolph Tandler, James Green, and James Schmidt.
  • Documents, photographs, and information related to early Elsah, Illinois, and its environs including the estates of Notch Cliffe and Eliestoun.
